Monel 500 series
Monel K-500 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-copper alloy combining the excellent corrosion resistance of Monel 400 with greater strength and hardness — obtained by adding aluminium and titanium to the nickel-copper base with age-hardening thermal processing. In the age-hardened condition K-500 has a greater tendency toward stress-corrosion cracking in some environments than Monel 400. Strength runs approximately three times the yield and double the tensile of alloy 400, further increasable by cold working before precipitation hardening. Strength holds to 1200°F while staying ductile and tough down to 400°F; melting range 2400–2460°F. Spark-resistant and non-magnetic to −200°F — though processing can form a magnetic nickel-rich surface film (aluminium and copper oxidise selectively on heating); pickling or bright-dipping restores non-magnetic properties.
